Anthurium ‘Ace of Spades’ × Blue Papillilaminum is an exceptional collector hybrid combining the dark, brooding intensity of Ace of Spades with the refined structure and cool-toned undertones of Anthurium papillilaminum. The result is a dramatic velvet-leaf Anthurium with deep, near-black foliage, pronounced venation, and a subtle blue-green sheen under the right light. Powerful, elegant, and highly sought after, this hybrid is firmly in collector territory.

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Bright, indirect light; avoid direct sun which can scorch velvet foliage and dull leaf colour.
  • Ideal Room: Plant rooms, greenhouse cabinets, warm rooms with stable humidity
  • Feeding: Diluted balanced aroid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during active growth
  • Humidity: High humidity (65–85%) strongly recommended to maintain leaf texture and size
  • Ideal Temperature: 20–27°C; avoid temperatures below 16°C
  • Watering: Keep substrate lightly moist; allow the top 2–3 cm to dry slightly between waterings. Never allow to sit in water.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Toxic (genus level) — contains calcium oxalate crystals that may cause irritation if ingested
  • Soil Type: Very chunky, well-aerated aroid mix with bark, perlite, pumice, and sphagnum moss
  • Propagation: Stem division or node cuttings; growth and propagation are slow
  • Eventual Height and Spread: 50–80 cm tall; 40–60 cm wide depending on conditions
  • Growth Rate: Slow to moderate; leaf size increases gradually with maturity
  • Pests and Treatment: Susceptible to thrips and spider mites; maintain humidity and inspect regularly
  • Repotting: Every 1–2 years or when roots outgrow the pot; avoid oversized containers
  • Pruning: Remove older or damaged leaves at the base to redirect energy to new growth
  • Air Purification: Good; contributes to improved indoor air quality
  • Folklore: Dark velvet Anthuriums are often associated with power, rarity, and prestige, symbolising depth and strength within elite plant collections
