Alocasia ‘Venom’ is a rare and dramatic hybrid Alocasia known for its deeply veined, sharply contoured leaves and intense contrast between dark green leaf blades and lighter, almost glowing veins. Its fierce, reptilian appearance and upright stance give it a striking, “dangerous beauty” aesthetic, making it a standout piece in any aroid collection.

  • Full Botanical Name: Alocasia ‘Venom’ (Hybrid)
  • Common Names: Venom Alocasia, Venom Jewel Alocasia
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Hybrid cultivar; parent species originate from Southeast Asian rainforests
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Parent species grow on tropical rainforest floors in warm, humid, shaded environments with consistently moist but well-draining soil

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh direct sunlight which can burn the foliage, but do not place in low light as leaf definition may fade.
  • Ideal Room: Warm, humid rooms such as bathrooms, heated kitchens, or enclosed plant cabinets.
  • Feeding: Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced, diluted fertilizer to support strong leaf development.
  • Humidity: Prefers high humidity (60–80%). Leaves may crisp if humidity drops too low.
  • Ideal Temperature: Thrives in 20–27°C; avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 16°C.
  • Watering: Keep soil lightly and evenly moist. Allow the top 2–3 cm of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid letting the plant sit in water.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Toxic (genus level) — contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that cause severe oral irritation, swelling, drooling, and vomiting if ingested by humans, cats, dogs, reptiles, or amphibians.
  • Soil Type: Use a chunky aroid mix with bark, pumice or perlite, and coco coir for aeration and drainage.
  • Propagation: Rhizome division; best performed during active growth periods.
  • Eventual Height and Spread: 40–70 cm tall; 30–50 cm wide depending on conditions.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; faster under high humidity and warm temperatures.
  • Pests and Treatment: Vulnerable to spider mites, thrips, and mealybugs. Treat with neem oil, horticultural soap, or systemic insecticide.
  • Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years or when roots fill the pot. Use fresh, airy substrate.
  • Pruning: Remove yellowing or damaged leaves at the base to maintain health.
  • Air Purification: Moderate air-purifying ability.
  • Folklore: Often associated with intensity, power, and transformation due to its fierce, venom-like visual impact and bold veining.
