Meet the Yucatan Princess—the regal giant of the shadows. With her enormous, puckered leaves in a deep, moody chocolate-burgundy and matching dark stems, she’s a gothic masterpiece. She’s tall, dark, and handsome, making her a massive statement piece for any room!

  • The Formal Name: Alocasia sarawakensis 'Yucatan Princess'
  • The Nickname: The Chocolate Elephant Ear
  • Roots: A stunning cultivar of a species native to Sarawak, Borneo.
  • Natural Vibe: Humid, tropical forest edges where she can stretch toward the sun.

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Sunlight: Bright, indirect light. Her dark leaves can handle a bit more brightness than silver varieties, but still no direct midday sun.
  • Best Room: A large, well-lit living room where she has space to grow.
  • Snacks: She’s a heavy feeder! Use a balanced fertiliser every 2–3 weeks in summer.
  • Tropical Feels: Loves humidity but is surprisingly robust compared to "Jewel" Alocasias.
  • Cosy Factor: Prefers warmth (18–28°C); she may go dormant if things get too chilly.
  • Thirst: Keep soil moist but well-drained. Let the top inch dry out before watering again.
  • Safety First: Toxic – contains calcium oxalate; keep away from nibblers.
  • The Bedding: A rich, well-draining potting mix with added perlite.
  • Family Tree: Propagate by dividing the root clump or collecting large corms.
  • Space Needs: A true princess that can reach up to 1.5 metres tall indoors!
  • Speed: Fast-growing when given enough light and space.
  • Uninvited Guests: Keep an eye out for mealybugs hiding in the leaf folds.
  • Moving Day: Repot every year as she grows quickly and will need the support.
  • Haircut: Remove older, lower leaves as they fade to keep the plant looking tidy.
  • Fresh Air: Her massive leaves are like solar panels for cleaning your indoor air.
  • Plant Lore: Despite her name, she isn't from Mexico; "Yucatan" is just a regal marketing name!
