Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate some shade. Too much direct sunlight can scorch its large leaves, so it’s best to provide filtered light or partial shade.
  • Ideal Room: Ideal for living rooms, sunrooms, or conservatories with plenty of indirect light. It can also be placed outdoors in shaded garden areas or tropical climates.
  • Feeding: Fertilize every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer. Reduce feeding during the fall and winter months when the plant is dormant.
  • Humidity: Prefers high humidity. Keep it in a humid room or use a humidifier, or place it on a humidity tray to help maintain the ideal moisture levels for healthy growth.
  • Ideal Temperature: Best kept between 65°F and 80°F (18°C to 27°C). Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F (10°C), as it is sensitive to frost.
  • Watering: Water regularly when the top inch of soil feels dry. This plant enjoys moist soil, but make sure to avoid waterlogging, which can lead to root rot. Let the soil dry out slightly between waterings.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Toxic to pets and children if ingested. Keep out of reach of animals and young children to prevent accidental ingestion, which can cause digestive upset or irritation.
  • Soil Type: Use a well-draining potting mix enriched with organic matter. A mix designed for tropical plants or aroids will work well for this species.
  • Propagation: Propagate by division. During repotting, divide the plant into smaller sections, making sure each section has roots and a healthy crown. Replant each division in fresh, well-draining soil.
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Can grow up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall with a spread of up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) under ideal conditions. The plant's large leaves create an impressive, bold display.
  • Growth Rate: Fast-growing. It can quickly establish itself and produce new leaves, especially when provided with the right care and a warm, humid environment.
  • Pests and Treatment: Prone to pests such as aphids, spider mites, and mealybugs. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil to keep the plant healthy and pest-free.
  • Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Use a larger pot with good drainage and fresh, well-draining soil to allow the plant to continue growing.
  • Pruning: Prune dead or yellowing leaves regularly to maintain the plant’s appearance. Pruning also helps control the size and shape of the plant, encouraging new growth.
  • Air Purification: Like other tropical plants, Alocasia macrorrhiza can help purify the air by removing toxins such as formaldehyde and benzene, improving indoor air quality.
  • Folklore: In some cultures, Alocasia plants are believed to bring protection and positive energy to the home. Their large, dramatic leaves are thought to symbolize prosperity and good fortune, making them popular choices for houseplants and garden decoration.
