Alocasia ‘Frydek Variegata’ is a rare and highly sought-after variegated form of the beloved Alocasia Frydek. Its velvety emerald leaves are strikingly marbled with creamy whites and minty variegation, creating a dramatic contrast that makes this plant a collector’s favourite. Elegant, luxurious, and visually captivating, it thrives best in warm, bright, and humid environments.

  • Full Botanical Name: Alocasia micholitziana ‘Frydek Variegata’
  • Common Names: Variegated Frydek, Variegated Green Velvet Alocasia
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Hybrid cultivar; parent species from the Philippines
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Parent species grow on humid tropical forest floors with dappled light, warm temperatures, and rich, airy soil

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Bright, indirect light is essential; variegation reduces chlorophyll, so avoid low light. Direct sun may scorch the velvety leaves.
  • Ideal Room: Warm, humid spaces such as bathrooms, kitchens, plant rooms, or greenhouse cabinets
  • Feeding: Diluted balanced fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer; avoid overfeeding which may damage variegated tissue
  • Humidity: High humidity (60–80%); misting, pebble trays, or humidifiers strongly recommended
  • Ideal Temperature: 20–27°C; protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 16°C
  • Watering: Keep soil lightly moist; allow the top 2–3 cm to dry before watering. Never saturate the soil—variegated Alocasias are highly susceptible to root rot.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Toxic (genus level) — contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals that cause severe oral pain, swelling, drooling, and vomiting if ingested by pets or humans.
  • Soil Type: Chunky, well-draining aroid soil with bark, perlite, pumice, and coco coir
  • Propagation: Rhizome division during repotting; variegation may vary between divisions
  • Eventual Height and Spread: 50–70 cm tall; 40–60 cm wide depending on environment
  • Growth Rate: Slow to moderate; variegation generally slows growth compared to the non-variegated Frydek
  • Pests and Treatment: Prone to spider mites and thrips due to its velvety leaves; treat promptly with neem oil or plant-safe insecticide
  • Repotting: Every 1–2 years in fresh, airy substrate; avoid oversized pots
  • Pruning: Remove yellow or damaged leaves to support strong new growth
  • Air Purification: Good; improves indoor air quality while offering a stunning visual impact
  • Folklore: Variegated Alocasias are often associated with prosperity and rarity, symbolising luxury and good fortune due to their unique, naturally unpredictable markings
