Aglaomorpha coronans, also known as the Crown Fern, Snake Leaf Fern, is an epiphytic fern admired for its dramatic, arching fronds and distinctive basket-like growth habit. This tropical fern produces two types of fronds: long fertile fronds that carry spores and shorter sterile fronds that form a protective nest, often used to hold organic matter. Native to Southeast Asia, it thrives in warm, humid environments and is popular among collectors of rare epiphytic ferns.

  • Full Botanical Name: Aglaomorpha coronans
  • Common Names: Crown Fern
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Southeast Asia, including Malaysia and Indonesia
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Epiphytic on trees or rocks in tropical rainforests with high humidity, filtered light, and excellent air circulation.

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight which can scorch the fronds.
  • Ideal Room: Bathrooms, kitchens, or terrariums where humidity is naturally higher; also suitable for well-lit living spaces with indirect sunlight.
  • Feeding: Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
  • Humidity: High humidity is essential. Mist regularly or place near a humidifier.
  • Ideal Temperature: Prefers 18–30°C (65–86°F). Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 12°C (54°F).
  • Watering: Keep the root ball moist but not waterlogged. Use rainwater or distilled water if possible. Reduce watering slightly in winter.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Considered non-toxic to pets and children.
  • Soil Type: Epiphytic medium or well-draining orchid bark mix. Can also be mounted on wood with sphagnum moss.
  • Propagation: By division of the rhizome or offsets. Ensure each section has a healthy root system.
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Fertile fronds can reach up to 1–2 meters (3–6 ft) in length, sterile fronds form a circular nest around 30–60 cm (12–24 in) wide.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate; establishes slowly but can become quite dramatic over several years.
  • Pests and Treatment: Occasionally affected by scale or mealybugs. Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
  • Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when the plant outgrows its basket or mounting.
  • Pruning: Remove dead or damaged fronds to maintain appearance and plant health.
  • Air Purification: Helps improve indoor air quality, adding a lush, tropical aesthetic.
  • Folklore: Epiphytic ferns like Aglaomorpha coronans are often associated with resilience and adaptability, symbolizing growth in challenging conditions.
