Adromischus cooperi, commonly known as the Plover's Eggs Plant, is a charming succulent native to the Eastern Cape of South Africa. This species is appreciated for its fleshy, grey-green leaves adorned with distinctive brown-red spots, resembling the speckled eggs of a plover bird. Its slow-growing, branching habit makes it an excellent choice for collectors and succulent enthusiasts.

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Requires bright sunlight to develop its characteristic leaf spots. A few hours of direct sunlight daily is beneficial, especially during the winter months.
  • Ideal Room: Suitable for windowsills, conservatories, or any space with ample natural light.
  • Feeding: Fertilize monthly with a half-strength cactus fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer).
  • Humidity: Low humidity; this plant is adapted to dry conditions and does not require additional humidity.
  • Ideal Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 10°C and 15°C (50°F to 59°F). It can tolerate short periods down to -7°C (19°F) if well-drained.
  • Watering: Water moderately during the growing period (spring-summer), allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. In winter, reduce watering frequency to prevent root rot.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Non-toxic to pets and children.
  • Soil Type: Requires a well-draining, sandy or gritty potting mix to prevent water retention.
  • Propagation: Propagate by leaf or stem cuttings taken during the growing season. Allow cuttings to callus over before planting in well-draining soil.
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Typically reaches up to 10 cm (4 inches) in height with a spread of 10–50 cm (4–20 inches) over several years.
  • Growth Rate: Slow-growing; may take several years to reach full size.
  • Pests and Treatment: Generally disease-free but may be susceptible to mealybugs and aphids. Treat infestations promptly with appropriate insecticides or natural remedies.
  • Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound, using a well-draining cactus or succulent mix.
  • Pruning: Remove dead or damaged leaves to maintain plant health and appearance.
  • Air Purification: While not specifically noted for air purification, like many succulents, it may contribute to a healthier indoor environment.
  • Folklore: Succulents like Adromischus cooperi are often associated with resilience and endurance due to their hardy nature.
