  • Full Botanical Name: Adenium obesum 'ANSU Baobab'
  • Common Names: Desert Rose, Baobab Adenium
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Native to arid regions of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Grows in hot, dry environments with full sun exposure, receiving minimal rainfall and thriving in well-draining, sandy soils

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Prefers bright, direct sunlight. The plant thrives in full sun and requires at least 6 hours of sunlight a day to maintain healthy growth and vibrant blooms. It can tolerate some partial shade, but its growth will slow, and flowering may be reduced.
  • Ideal Room: Ideal for sunny windowsills, patios, or gardens with ample sunlight. Perfect for indoor spaces where sunlight is abundant or for outdoor planters in warmer climates.
  • Feeding: Fertilize once a month during the growing season (spring to summer) with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer. Reduce feeding in the fall and winter months when the plant is not actively growing.
  • Humidity: Tolerates dry air and low humidity. It is well-suited to typical indoor environments, especially in homes with low humidity levels. No misting or extra humidity is necessary.
  • Ideal Temperature: Best kept between 70°F and 90°F (21°C to 32°C) during the growing season. Protect from temperatures below 50°F (10°C) as it is frost-sensitive and can suffer damage in cold conditions.
  • Watering: Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings, as Adeniums are susceptible to root rot if overwatered. Water thoroughly but avoid letting the plant sit in excess water. During the winter months, reduce watering even further.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Toxic to pets and children if ingested. Keep out of reach of animals and young children to prevent accidental ingestion, which can cause irritation or digestive upset.
  • Soil Type: Use a well-draining, sandy potting mix. A cactus or succulent mix will work well, or you can make your own by adding perlite or sand to regular potting soil to improve drainage.
  • Propagation: Propagate by stem cuttings. Take a healthy cutting with a node and let it callous for a few days before planting it in well-draining soil. Water sparingly until roots form and new growth appears.
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Typically grows up to 3-4 feet (90-120 cm) tall and wide. It develops a swollen, baobab-like trunk that adds to its unique sculptural appearance, making it a great focal point in gardens or containers.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate-growing. It can take a few years to develop its characteristic swollen trunk and reach its mature size, but with proper care, it will flower regularly during the growing season.
  • Pests and Treatment: Generally resistant to pests but may occasionally attract aphids or mealybugs. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil to keep the plant healthy.
  • Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a slightly larger pot with good drainage to accommodate the plant’s growing root system.
  • Pruning: Prune dead or damaged stems regularly to maintain the plant’s appearance and encourage new growth. Pruning helps to shape the plant and control its size, particularly for those grown in containers.
  • Air Purification: Known for its aesthetic beauty and low-maintenance qualities, Adenium obesum 'ANSU Baobab' is a great addition to a garden or interior space. While not primarily known for air purification, its striking form and colorful blooms add visual appeal to any environment.
  • Folklore: In some cultures, the Desert Rose (Adenium) is believed to bring good fortune and positive energy. It is also thought to symbolize endurance and survival, making it a meaningful plant in feng shui and various symbolic practices.
