  • Full Botanical Name: Cereus spp.
  • Common Names: Cereus Cactus, Night-blooming Cereus
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Native to tropical and desert regions of the Americas, particularly in Mexico and South America
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Grows in dry, rocky soils with minimal water and full sunlight

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Prefers full sunlight. Cereus cacti thrive in direct light, but can tolerate partial shade. Too much shade can slow their growth and affect flowering.
  • Ideal Room: Ideal for sunny windowsills, patios, or outdoor gardens. The mix is perfect for creating focal points in gardens or as decorative indoor plants in containers.
  • Feeding: Fertilize sparingly, once every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring to summer) with a diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer to promote healthy growth.
  • Humidity: Tolerates dry air and is well-suited for homes with low humidity. Cereus cacti are excellent for arid environments.
  • Ideal Temperature: Best kept between 70°F and 85°F (21°C to 29°C). Protect from temperatures below 50°F (10°C) as cold drafts can damage the plant.
  • Watering: Water sparingly. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Cereus cacti are highly susceptible to root rot if overwatered, so be sure not to let the soil stay wet.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Toxic to pets and children if ingested. Keep out of reach to avoid accidental poisoning due to the sap and thorns.
  • Soil Type: Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix. A mix containing sand and perlite ensures good drainage and prevents water retention around the roots.
  • Propagation: Propagate by stem cuttings or by offsets. Let the cuttings callus over for a few days before planting them in dry, well-draining soil to encourage root growth.
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Typically grows up to 10-15 feet (3-4.5 meters) tall, though its height can vary depending on species and growing conditions. The spread is usually 3-5 feet (1-1.5 meters).
  • Growth Rate: Slow to moderate growth rate, especially in low-light conditions. However, when provided optimal care, it can grow steadily over time.
  • Pests and Treatment: Generally pest-resistant but may occasionally attract mealybugs, aphids, or spider mites. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil to prevent damage.
  • Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot with proper drainage to avoid water accumulation and root rot.
  • Pruning: Prune dead or damaged stems to maintain the plant’s appearance. Be cautious when handling, as the plant’s spines can be sharp.
  • Air Purification: While not primarily known for air purification, the presence of Cereus plants can help create a clean and serene atmosphere due to their unique, minimalist form.
  • Folklore: Cereus plants are often considered symbols of strength and resilience, thriving in harsh, arid environments. They are believed to bring stability and positive energy into the home, and their occasional nocturnal blooms are seen as symbols of mystery and beauty.
