Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while too little light can cause the plant to become leggy and the foliage colors to fade.
  • Ideal Room: Ideal for living rooms, bathrooms, kitchens, or bedrooms with indirect light. Its lush foliage thrives in humidity, making it a great choice for spaces like bathrooms or kitchens.
  • Feeding: Fertilize once every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring to summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer to encourage healthy growth and vibrant leaves.
  • Humidity: Thrives in high humidity. Mist regularly, place on a humidity tray, or use a room humidifier to maintain moisture levels and promote healthy growth.
  • Ideal Temperature: Best kept between 65°F and 75°F (18°C to 24°C). Protect from temperatures below 50°F (10°C), as cold drafts can damage the plant.
  • Watering: Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Be sure to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Use distilled or non-fluoridated water if possible, as Calatheas are sensitive to chemicals found in tap water.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Non-toxic to pets and children, making it a safe option for households with animals or young children.
  • Soil Type: Use a well-draining, rich potting mix, such as one designed for houseplants or a mix containing peat, perlite, and orchid bark for optimal aeration and drainage.
  • Propagation: Propagate by division during repotting. Separate the root ball into sections, ensuring each division has at least one healthy stem and root system.
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Typically grows up to 18-24 inches (45-60 cm) tall and spreads to about 18 inches (45 cm), making it ideal for tabletops, floor displays, or smaller spaces.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate growth rate, especially during the warmer months when given proper light, watering, and humidity.
  • Pests and Treatment: Watch for pests such as aphids, spider mites, and mealybugs. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil to prevent damage to the plant.
  • Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot with drainage holes to prevent water retention at the base of the pot.
  • Pruning: Prune dead or damaged leaves regularly to maintain the plant’s appearance. Pruning can also encourage new growth and prevent leggy growth.
  • Air Purification: Known for its air-purifying qualities, Calathea 'Moonlight' helps to improve indoor air quality by removing harmful toxins like formaldehyde and benzene.
  • Folklore: Calatheas are often believed to bring peace and tranquility into the home, with their beautiful foliage symbolizing balance and harmony. The "prayer" movement of their leaves at night is thought to promote restful sleep and peaceful environments.
