Caladium, also known as "Elephant Ear" or "Angel Wings," is a tropical plant prized for its striking, heart-shaped leaves and vibrant colors. Native to South America, particularly Brazil, Caladiums come in a variety of hues, including white, pink, red, and green, often with intricate veining. Known for its decorative foliage, Caladium makes a stunning addition to gardens, patios, or indoor spaces with indirect light and high humidity. It thrives in warm, humid environments and is perfect for adding bold, colorful accents to any space.

  • Full Botanical Name: Caladium
  • Common Names: Elephant Ear, Angel Wings
  • Country and/or Region of Origin: Native to South America, particularly Brazil and surrounding tropical regions
  • Growing Conditions in Native Habitat: Grows in tropical rainforests with filtered light and high humidity, often found in the shaded understory of the forest.

Care Guide

  • Care Guide:
  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate some low light, too little light will result in poor leaf coloration and reduced growth. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the delicate leaves.
  • Ideal Room: Ideal for living rooms, bathrooms, or kitchens with high humidity. It works well in containers, making it perfect for indoor decor in areas with indirect light and consistent warmth.
  • Feeding: Fertilize once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer. Reduce feeding during the fall and winter months when the plant's growth slows.
  • Humidity: Prefers high humidity, typical of its native tropical environment. Regular misting, placing it on a humidity tray, or using a humidifier will help maintain moisture levels for optimal growth.
  • Ideal Temperature: Best kept between 65°F and 75°F (18°C to 24°C). Protect from temperatures below 50°F (10°C), as it is sensitive to cold drafts and frost.
  • Watering: Water regularly when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. Keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy, as overwatering can lead to root rot. Ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent water from accumulating at the bottom.
  • Pet/Child Safe: Toxic to pets (cats and dogs) and children if ingested, so keep out of reach of animals and young children.
  • Soil Type: Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix that retains moisture while allowing excess water to drain away. A mix designed for tropical plants works well for Caladium species.
  • Propagation: Propagate by dividing the tubers (bulbs) during the dormant season. Each tuber should have at least one eye or growing point. Allow the cut surface to callous over before planting in fresh, well-draining soil.
  • Eventual Height and Spread: Typically grows up to 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) in height with a spread of about 12-24 inches (30-60 cm), forming a bushy, compact growth habit with large, colorful leaves.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate-growing. Caladiums are typically seasonal, growing vigorously during the warmer months and becoming dormant in winter. The growth slows significantly during the fall and winter months.
  • Pests and Treatment: Generally pest-resistant, but may occasionally attract aphids, spider mites, or scale insects. Treat infestations with neem oil or insecticidal soap to keep the plant healthy.
  • Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that is 1-2 inches larger than the current one and ensure it has good drainage to promote healthy root growth.
  • Pruning: Prune dead or yellowing leaves regularly to maintain a tidy appearance. Pruning can also help control the plant’s size and encourage new growth from the base.
  • Air Purification: Like many tropical plants, Caladium helps improve indoor air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, making it a beneficial addition to your home or office.
  • Folklore: Caladiums are often associated with vitality, beauty, and good fortune. Their bright, colorful leaves are seen as symbols of happiness and are thought to bring positive energy to the home.
